The Rise of Metrosexuals
Non-surgical cosmetic procedures are becoming popular with men, but which treatments are the most common and why?
Fillers and laser hair removal among men are on the rise, thanks to trendsetters like Simon Cowell and Rylan Clark. But what are these metrosexuals asking from cosmetic clinics. Which are the most popular procedures?
The Most Popular Procedures
Botulinum Toxin Injections – Many men with client facing jobs are now choosing to have injections in order to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. This is not for a taut, shiny appearance but to subtly improve their look, so they appear younger, fresher and just generally less stressed out.
The most popular areas for treatment are around the eyes, the forehead and mouth.
Fractional Laser Treatments – This is a safe laser skin treatment that can be used to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, as well as, surface scarring, pigmentation, sun damage and Actinic Keratosis (AK). It is non-invasive and the laser light’s energy will stimulate your skin’s natural production of collagen. This will rejuvenate your skin, improving its appearance.
Facial Fillers – Also known as ‘dermal fillers’, these like the botulinum toxin injections will leave you looking younger and fresher. These fillers will ‘pad out’ chosen sections, such as deep wrinkles, and lift the contours of your face.
Hair Removal – Some people like a hairy chest but for some grooming can get a little too much. Hair removal treatments remove the hair and prevent it from growing back at the normal rate. This can also be an effective treatment against shaving rashes and ingrown hairs.
Laser Liposuction – There is nothing attractive about love handles and a muffin top (a beer belly hanging over the top of a pair of trousers), and many men are choosing to address this with a quick treatment of laser liposuction. This procedure claims to remove inches in minutes.
Why the Rise in Popularity?
Some London based practitioners are now claiming that the number of male visits have increased more than 20% in the last year or so, and that men now account for a quarter of all patients. Popularity has boomed; but why is this?
The Joint Medical Director at The Private Clinic of Harley Street, Dr Dennis Wolf has commented,
'I think it’s fair to say that today men have a more open attitude towards cosmetic procedures. I also think men are now more aware of the treatments that are available to them.
If we look back 5-10 years, you would find a far lower number of men willing to have cosmetic treatments to improve the way they look; not because they did not want to undergo the procedure, but perhaps because they were embarrassed or did not want others to see them as vain.
Now, however, perceptions have changed and people don’t associate cosmetic treatments solely with women.’
